Nanae-cho is a town, about 16km north and about a 25 minute drive from Hakodate city. For a long time, it was known as a scenic picturesque spot. The town has much scenic beautiful nature let alone Onuma Quasi-National Park, one of the three new famous beautiful locations of Japan. The change in the color of nature in the 4 seasons in Onuma Lake and Mt. Kokagatake heals the hearts of tourists. You can enjoy cycling or walking along to the lake in the vast nature. The town is also rich in great food and also known as the birthplace of western agriculture.

Lakeside Promenade

This tour takes visitors on a walking tour of the small islands in Onuma. There are four walking routes, including the “Road to Oshima” (15 minutes), which is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs, and the “Road to the Islands” (50 minutes), which crosses the Kozuki Bridge from Kyoshi no Dia to visit seven islands.

When you come to Onuma, rent a bicycle and go cycling along the Onuma Lakeside in the National Park. The sound of birdsong and forest bathing will soothe you.

Hakodate's nightscape is one of the world's top three nightscapes. The back nightscape of Hakodate is called the “back nightscape” and is located here, at the Shirotai Pasture Observatory and Shirotai Skyline.

The walking path on the Onuma side is called the Sunset Path. It is a 25-minute route, and the sunset over the mountains on the west side is spectacular.

Snow and Ice Festival

The Onuma Winter Festival is held every February. The “jumbo slide” made of ice cut from the frozen swamp is very popular among both children and adults. Snow sculptures made by local children are also displayed.

Nanae Historical Museum

Two years after Ezochi was renamed Hokkaido, the first experimental agricultural park in Hokkaido, Nanae Kanen, was established. This is a good example of how Nanae Town was pioneered.

THE DANSHAKU LOUNGE

Baron potatoes of (Baron) Ryukichi Kawada, who imported potato variety seeds from the U.S. to Japan and successfully cultivated them. This shopping plaza exhibits equipment and furniture from that time.

Onuma Komagatake Shrine

It was built as a Shinto shrine for Hokkaido Komagatake. It is popularly believed that passing through the large rock that is split in two in the precincts will bring good luck in overcoming difficulties (currently off-limits).

Kyoshi-no-michi

It is written that when the grandson of Kyoshi Takahama, a Meiji-era haiku poet who studied under Shiki Masaoka, was born, he held a haiku gathering at this Onuma and composed his poems.

3 Roads to Know Nanae

Red Pine Road (Industry)

This is a historical road where red pine trees were grown from seeds imported from Sado Island and planted. 14 km of these trees were transplanted to Japan's first Western-style carriage road when the Emperor Meiji made a royal visit. 1,300 trees still exist today, more than 160 years old, and the road was active in transporting goods to and from Nanae.

Milk Road (Dairy)

The location is on Milk Road, a line of dairy cow dairy farms in Ikusagawa, Nanae. It is so named because there is a direct sales store where visitors can taste rich soft-serve ice cream and milk. It is an important industry of Nanae.

Fruit Road (Agriculture)

Nanae was the birthplace of Japan's first western apple cultivation, and since then many varieties of fruits have been grown in the town. In particular, it is called “Fruit Road” because of the rows of orchards along the old national highway. The busy harvest season is from June to October. You will see many smiling faces.

About 60 minutes by car from Nanae Town. The Kaiyomaru, the last warship of the Edo Shogunate that headed toward the modernization of Japan, sank off the coast of Esashi. You can hear about the many layers of history in the Esashi Oiwake and Ubajin Grand Shrine Procession Festival.
